Faith tested
When the dimming of a star
With its quarter century
Of cocky ownership
Allowed the spirit of eagles soaring
To seep green into my psyche

My life of dread
When football takes the energy
Of all around
To a point where
To see the field differently
Is to risk life and limb

But my loyalties are too far removed
And the ownership
Seems so arrogant as to forget
That they were once
America’s team
Mostly because they won
But also because there was a proud,
Gentlemanly way

Today at practice
That fight song roared with pride
And energy
The players on point
The practice quick and efficient
Perpetual motion
The way a practice should be

I’m wavering…
