Teachers waiting for the students to enter school.
They stood in their classrooms on the first day.
Outside, the kids got off their busses,
And rallied their numbers below the steps.
Adults shuffled nervously at the top,
Wondering how to handle a protest of their making.
As if they had rehearsed the whole thing,
The students formed lines for each door.
When the warning bell sounded,
They put their heads down and walked silently to homeroom.
“This will be the last time they are quiet like this,” said Principal Alvarado.
“Wrong,” thought Jerry Dean, the basketball playing ringleader.
