Perspectives: 37/365

Yet it’s not sure if sports
Were ever great in Taylorville.
Waves of talented athletes
Passed through the small town,
Sometimes the league talent was down,
One year everything lined up,
The Taylorville talent was high,
The league talent was low,
And the sports gods moved the soccer team
To the front of the queue.
Despite being state champions,
The community decided to fire the coach,
He just wasn’t good enough.
He didn’t play all of the kids.
He yelled.
He cursed.
He did not represent the school well.
So, even at their best,
Taylorville was not able to accept sports
Without the pettiness that often
Pins a culture in mediocracy.
