Levels of Intensity (LHS Hoops 1/10)

Level 1

Six minutes is a long time
Especially with young legs and supple lungs.
Six minutes is not a long time
When conditioning does not equal pacing.
Six minutes is plenty of time
For a fifteen year old to run a mile.
Six minutes can be endured
If it means getting out sprints at the end of practice.

Level 2

One on one is not much of a game
Unless there is something riding on the outcome.
One on one is a piece of cake
Except when it’s only played to two.
One on one is brutal
When it’s played full court.
One on one sucks
When the loser stays…and stays…and stays…

Level 3

Sprints are more mental than anything
Especially when the heart is pounding like a bass drum.
Sprints are more mental than anything
Especially when they come with twenty four second time limits.
Sprints are more mental than anything
Particularly when they come after running a 6:02 mile.
Sprints are more mental than anything
If only you convince yourself that’s all they are.

Author’s Note: This is the first in a series of poems about playing basketball in high school (a long time ago…).The poems will be posted on weekends in October.
