Opening Day

Cracking bats, popping gloves, and
Conjure memories of baseball
Ring hollow
Around this way.
Long seasons, slow play,
Double switches, and
All these situational substitutions
Have taken away the spirit
Of the pastime.
The game, once “pastoral,”
According to Carlin,
Has made its way to pasture
Via trades, free agency,
Performance enhancing mayhem, and
Ridiculous sports commentary on television.

Bring back stolen bases,
Choking up with two strikes,
Line drive hitters,
Quirky managers,
Umpires behind big chest protectors,
Bunts,
Day games, and
Harry Caray.

I know, I’m getting old,
But I miss simple baseball,
The character of a once great game.
