Unsuspecting

The banjoes gave their tinny sound,
“Anchors Away,” “Stout Hearted Men,”
And “Our Director March,”
The songs the Ukrainian-American String Band
Played down Broad Street
In Philly’s Mummer’s Parade.

Sixty performers dressed
In sailor suits,
Stylized with red and blue trim, and
Adorned with white capes
Culminated their year of practice
By entertaining the hearty crowd.

That night they would lock up
Proud of their showing
Knowing the parade is special
Because of the time
They all spend together
In their little club.

They never knew that a spark
Would turn into a flame
Taking out twenty one
Of the nautical costumes,
Leaving disappointment at the loss
And thanks for the sparing of injury.
