Clamming Up

Willard learned a tough lesson
While shucking clams
At Paddy’s over on Thirty-fourth.

Out back, away from the thousand a day
Who came in for the coffee, huckleberry pie,
And most importantly
The fresh seafood,
Willard was talking of his latest conquest.

Saturday night he had been his finest
Sharing an evening
With a beautiful woman he met in the park.
The other guys listened
With the faintest of interest
Because Willard could tell a tall tale.

As he shared the details of their intimacy
He talked of her tattoo, the siren Ligeia
“Man, she sure could sing.”

With that he caught a fist
To the side of his head,
Then a knee to the gut, and
Finally, a kick in the crotch.

Before more damage could be done
The other fellas got a hold of Cisco,
“That was my wife you were talking about!”

Willard learned to keep his mouth shut
While shucking clams
At Paddy’s over on Thirty-fourth
