Welcome to Bruton Heights

A new kid
Starting school
In the middle of the year
Takes guts.

The friendships and
Pecking orders are already established,
So the other kids
Really have no time for a new kid.

The back seat,
Next to the kid who was absent with pneumonia,
Was the only one in the class
Open for a body.

My desk was empty.
The sick kid’s was overflowing
With stuff to take home.
He wouldn’t manage that for weeks.

When he did come back
We became friends,
Teammates, and someone
I never had to have guts with.
