As an undergraduate,
Back when rap was young,
My professor shared a story
Of the local police department under fire
Because they gave accommodations
To the fine citizens of Newport News
For following the speed limit.
It seems that someone had the good idea
To stop the few speed limit respecting do-gooders
Over on J-Clyde Morris and cite them with
A ticket for NOT speeding.
This went over worse than the actual summons
For going Andretti on the busy boulevard,
Forcing the positive thinking cops
To reassess their plan.

As societies have become accustomed
To the “reward me for everything mentality,”
Organizations are plowing through old ideas
Hoping to keep people on the right track.

I bet a sincere thank you,
Personalized, not raffled or convoluted,
Would be better.
