Names People Play

I once had a teacher
Who confused me
With another kid
I corrected her and she said,
“Whatever, all you white people look alike.”

I laughed
Because she meant nothing by it
And I took a great memory away

I once had a coach
Who questioned my pigmentation’s
Ability to jump
I took something from it
And worked that much harder

Another coach questioned
The baseball skills of my hometown
“Williamsburg kids,” he called us
I knew what he meant
I knew I had to do better

Stop being so sensitive everyone
What happened to words not hurting
Everything said is not racist,
Prejudiced, or meant to be stick or stone

Unless of course

You take it that way
