Morning sun on yesterday’s melt
Starts the purge of all this snow today
The cold still wraps everything
Except the birds, with their optimistic chirping,
Who know through instinct that this winter
Is nearly exhausted
The temperatures will rise today
Creating rivers on the roads
Where frozen puddles of ice
Pooled last night
Let this sun shine as long as it can
So we can splash about
And watch steam rise from the asphalt
As winter’s persistence gives way
To spring’s uncertainty
