The shame of it all
Is that we tell kids
That grades are all that matter
They hear, “If I don’t have an A+
I won’t get into a college”
Seriously???
There is more to life than an A+
There is more to life than an athletic scholarship
There is more to life than fancy “thisses and thatses”
There is more to life than fancy jobs,
Power,
Prestige,
And anything else that seems guaranteed
By the mythical A+
I vote for honest effort
I vote for perspective
I vote for satisfaction,
Appreciation,
Family,
And anything else that is guaranteed
By a solid foundation
Grades are snap shots, not absolute measures
Their worth only in showing points earned
Grades are not measures of a person’s learning
Just tallies of how many points were earned
Someday the analytics will swing
People will be measured less upon the final grade
And more upon better objectives
Like team playing,
Communication,
Problem solving, or
Humanness
So stop believing in the A+
It’s arbitrary
Better to believe in yourself,
Work hard, and
Let your direction be what it becomes
